This is what will get us to the top third of the conference – bringing in classes that are in the top third year after year.
Tell that to John Groce. Still plenty of work to be done!
That’s what I said – keep doing that year after year. Was that not clear?
Under Groce, Illinois has brought in the Big Ten’s 3rd-ranked class in 2013, the 6th-ranked class in 2014, and the 2nd-ranked class in 2015 (per 247).
Illinois is not in the top third of the conference and some wonder how hot Groce’s seat is in Illinois. They are not expected to make the NCAA tournament this year, which would mark their third straight season out of the NCAAs. Therefore, I’m saying that recruiting alone will not get PSU to the top third of the conference.
6th is technically not in the top third of 14 schools, but okay they are averaging better than top 4 for three years. They’ve also had injuries and other issues too. Sure, recruiting class ranking alone won’t get it done. Gotta get the right kids too. And get lucky with injuries.
Yes…injuries to Tracy Abrams, slated to be their starting point guard last season and this season, specifically, have hurt the Illini. Not having that facilitator can take a team from #4 to #6 in conference very easily. They’ll struggle again this season without that true point guard.
Here’s an article for those interested in reading about the plight of the Illini…
