Slow starts on the road

#1

I wanted to do a comparison on the last 8 games and contrast how we start out the game on the road as compared to how we start our games at home. Here is my comparison:

I noticed a stark contrast when you look at a benchmark event… the 4th (FOURTH) FG made by Penn State. I will use that as our ‘bookmark’ in each of these games.

I will annotate 2 things;

  • the time on the clock when the 4th FG was made (game time elapsed),
  • and the score of the game just before that FG was made (PSU - opp).

HOME GAMES:
Sun, Jan 8 vs#12 Indiana L88-82 13:50 (6:10) 10-16
Sun, Jan 15 vsMinnesota L80-66 12:43 (7:17) 13-13
Thu, Jan 19 vs#25 Illinois W54-52 13:30 (6:30) 7-9
Tue, Jan 31 vs#20 Wisconsin L52-46 16:15 (3:45) 6-6

ROAD GAMES:
Wed, Jan 11 @Nebraska L70-58 11:38 (8:22) 9-17
Sun, Jan 22 @#13 Indiana L73-54 10:07 (9:53) 8-10
Wed, Jan 25 @#3 Ohio State L78-54 6:03 (13:57) 6-24
Sat, Feb 4 @Iowa L77-64 5:53 (14:07) 8-27

So, our averages are:
HOME GAMES:
Final Score: 61-68 4th FG: 14:13 (5:47) Score at 4th FG: 9-11
ROAD GAMES:
Final Score: 58-75 4th FG: 8:25 (11:35) Score at 4th FG: 8-20

I think you are off on Wisconsin, and Illinois at home. If we made four field goals then why do we only have 7 and 6 points respectively?

#3

His times are correct (within a few seconds), but he has the scores wrong.

For Illinois, it was 13:24 (6:36) 9-9
For Wisconsin, it was 16:12 (3:48) 8-6

For Michigan State, it’s 4:59 (15:01) 12-25

I’m surprised, Lar. You are always such a stickler for reading comprehension.

You’re about 14 hours behind me.

But that’s not why I’m posting. I’m wondering where you are getting your data from since everyone that I’ve actually looked up seems to differ from yours by a few seconds. ???

Are there multiple play by plays out there?

I used ESPN

Not that it really matters in this case, but their stats are always off than the official ones.

You would think they would all be from the official scorekeeper. :stuck_out_tongue:

I would go with the ESPN numbers. After all they are the Gestapo of sports. I don’t want to cross them.

I’d love to see this thread next season for road Big 10 games.

#12

I really think our slow starts in road games is all about familiarity. As Steve Jones said the other day, Tim Frazier is the only guy on this team who played meaningful minutes in any road games last year. The hotels are different, the floor is different, the lighting is different, the backgrounds are different, etc, etc. By the time a guy has played in an away venue two or three times, he’s much more familiar with the facility and the whole routine.

I think some enterprising CSE student should come up with a method of holographic projections and turn the practice gym into a pseudo Kohl Center or Breslin Center before we play there so that the team gets the feel of the place before they play there.

#13

I there is more to it than that. At times we have trouble just getting off a shot. Other teams, like us, feed off their home crowd and force us to play tight on the road. Hopefully with more experience and added talent those days will soon be behind us .

#14

Experience absolutely helps. However, you need to have the talent as well. We have had both working against us in every road game we’ve had so far.

#15

The same guys play at home (and shoot 50%) that play on the road (and shoot 33%). The crowd is a factor and familiarity with the place is also a factor. We’re more familiar with our home court and therefore we shoot better.

#16

not to mention the Sterling basketball…oh, right, that’s next Sunday!

#17

I don’t think it has as much to do with the crowd as some believe.

I think it has much more to do with what you stated the first time… Routine. The courts are all the same. 10’ high rims, 15’ foul line from the backboard, 94’ court length, etc.

I’ve done a bit of travelling. When you travel to new places, you have a lot of mental stimulation going on. I find that on some trips, I can get just plain mentally tired. I can get fatigued or even have headaches, depending on how much is going on and how long the day has been. If I have been to a place before, it is not nearly as bad.

I think this happens with newbies. It’s why vets or upperclassmen perform better than the freshmen or sophs when they are on the road.

Just one man’s opinion… :-X

This is true. The first few times I flew or went on long trips it was stressful. Now I have learned to just go with it. I have my routines to keep my mind occupied and not stressing. When I arrive at my destination I am far more relaxed than I used to be. I’m sure that has an impact on a young team on the road.

Though just the same, these guys fly on charters right from PSU to the destination school airport about 24 hours before the game. It’s not like they have jet lag or have to deal with sitting in airports for 2+ hours before the flight.
