Recruiting rankings vs. actual performance

Many possibilities, among them:

Potential reality Cause Positive View Negative View
Underrated Recruitniks objectively wrong Staff is good at eyeing talent Staff is lucky - talent fell to them
Underrated Recruitniks subjectively wrong Staff is good at eyeing talent Staff is lucky - talent fell to them
Properly rated, unseen upside Kid’s upside not anticipated Staff is good at identifying potential talent Staff is lucky - kid is special
Properly rated, unseen upside Kid’s upside not anticipated Staff is good at developing potential talent Staff is lucky - kid thrived after getting thrown to wolves
etc.

Some anomalies - very easy to be tied in rank order, but not at all easy in PRPG!. So some +/-'s are off, particularly for unranked kids who are were assigned 501.

As a rule of thumb, you can use this table:

Relationship Applies To Correlation Coefficient
All Cases Perfect 1
Almost All Cases Almost Perfect 0.9-1
Most Cases Very Strong 0.8-0.9
Many Cases Strong 0.7-0.8
Some Cases Moderate 0.5-0.7
A Few Cases Weak 0.3-0.5
Few Cases Very Weak 0.2-0.3
Very Few Cases Negligible Below 0.2

Also, information about best uses of the three algorithms.

Relative ranking correlation, i.e.:

Are Big 10 players’ relative recruiting rankings correlated with their relative performance ranking.

That is, is the highest-ranked Big 10 recruit likely to be the best performer in his class (using PPRG! as a metric for performance)?

Interesting, though.

Freshman high correlation declines to moderate correlation in 2019 sophomore class, and then disappears in junior and senior classes.

Could be explained by:

  • Small sample
  • Better players from top 100 go pro
  • Edit add: Player development more important than high school performance as years go by
  • Something else?

I’ve finally mustered enough Googling SQL skills to look at how 246 Rankings compare to performance rankings in the Big 10.

I compared:

Relative 247 ranking among Big 10 players : Relative performance rank (PRPG!) among Big 10 players

By class.

As an example:

Eric Gordon was the top ranked freshman of all Big 10 freshmen in 2008 (247 No. 1). He also had the best PRPG! among Big 10 freshmen that year (5.37316). So he had a perfect correlation, 1:1.

No surprise!

However, when looking at all freshmen, the correlation between relative recruiting ranking and relative performance was moderate - 0.5331306314.

And when you sliced it up:

Correlation Coefficient Among Freshmen Correlation
0.5331306314 All Moderate
0.4099028757 Top 25 247 Weak
0.2309555722 26-50 247 Very weak
0.4849271752 Top 100 247 Weak
0.3792904148 Top 250 247 Weak
0.4290138384 Top 500 Weak

Similar numbers for all classes: moderate correlation for all players, weak at best once you begin slicing it up.

These numbers seem to suggest that recruiting rankings mean something, but not a lot.

Here are Penn State freshmen. The bad news is that Ra Bolton had the most over-performing freshmen year since these stats have been kept. The good news is that Myles was No. 4.

7 out of the top 10 Penn State recruits.

Unfortunately, those seven fellows were competing against Big 10 recruits and not prior Penn State recruits.

Still, I think one can make an argument that DeChellis did more with less. The flip side of course is that he was very much feast or famine in his tenure. Chambers has been the more consistent coach in terms of year to year results, they’ve just been consistently average results.

Five of the top ten were on the roster last season (Stevens, Dread, Watkins, Jones and Reaves). Four are back this season.

Unfortunately, I only have Big 10 composite 247 rankings (and not ratings) back to 2008.

I just ran a bunch of queries that ranked every Big 10 team since 2008 by Ranked Player Minutes (each player’s rank * the minutes he played)* and compared that with their Big 10 seed in the same year.

DeChellis outperformed his recruiting by an average of 1.33 seeds in his last three years. Chambers has underperformed his seed by an average of 1.375 in his eight seasons.

Without segmenting it out by coach, here’s the average over/under perform by school since 2008:

2008-19 AVG Max Over Max Under
Wisconsin 2.3 9.0 -2.0
Iowa 2.0 6.0 -2.0
Purdue 1.9 11.0 -7.0
Northwestern 1.8 6.0 -2.0
Minnesota 0.9 5.0 -6.0
Michigan 0.8 7.0 -4.0
Michigan St. 0.5 5.0 -4.0
Penn St. -0.3 3.0 -9.0
Ohio St. -1.0 7.0 -6.0
Rutgers -1.6 3.0 -8.0
Nebraska -1.6 6.0 -7.0
Maryland -1.8 2.0 -6.0
Indiana -2.8 5.0 -8.0
Illinois -3.3 3.0 -8.0

The -9 was Mike, Tony and Lamar’s freshman season, when those three and sophomore Josh Reaves got most of the minutes, jacking up Penn State’s ranked player minutes to third in the Big 10!

When you look through the year-to-year performances, you can see a lot of weird stuff that is probably related to experience and the roster makeup.

For example, that same year, 2017, Michigan State was No. 7 in the Big 10 in ranked player minutes, but the roster included some ridiculously high-ranked guys sharing a lot of minutes with some really (for Michigan St.) low ranked guys:

  %Min 247 Rank
Miles Bridges 63.7 11
Lourawls Nairn Jr. 56.9 102
Joshua Langford 52.2 18
Cassius Winston 51.5 30
Matt McQuaid 50.8 70
Nick Ward 49.4 41
Alvin Ellis III 48.3 316
Kenny Goins 45.5 501
Eron Harris 44 209
Kyle Ahrens 19.7 165
Matt Van Dyk 16.5 501

Even with those high ranking guys, the Ranked Player Minutes was only sixth in the conference. MSU was the 7 seed that year.

* Ranked player minutes only counts players who averaged 10% of minutes or more - unranked bench warmers don’t penalize you.

An Athletic story ($$$) about Victor Oladipo today contains this quote from IU forward Derek Elston:

The previous year (2009-10) was awful. At the start of the season, you have all these goals and aspirations, and then the bullets start flying. You realize, Wow, this league is not for the faint-hearted.

IU was sixth in ranked player minutes in ‘09-10 and was a 10 seed in the Big 10 tournament.

And so far PC’s done less with more.
Just getting the more, with less to offer, is an achievement of note.
Let’s hope that he can eventually do more, with the more he’s got.
Then again, the more he does have still isn’t that much, considering that most of the league has even more than that.

Got it??
