Penn State Lady Lion Signee Makenna Marisa

Penn State Class of 2019 signee Makenna Marisa scored a game-high 14 points to lead her Peters Township Indians (29-0) to a heart pounding 51-46 win in OT over Class 6A defending state champs Upper Dublin (25-5). Jackie Vargas (2020) the 6’-2" star forward for UD had just 8 points before fouling out late in the 4th. qtr. Peters Twp. is ranked #2 by Pennlive.com in Pennsylvania girls Class 6A and #25 in the nation by U.S.A. Today. Peters Twp. will play the winner of the Neshaminy vs Garnett Valley game currently in progress for the 2019 PIAA Class 6A state championship.

Marisa at 5’-11" can play PG, SG and Wing positions and was recently named the USA Today 'Super 25 Top Star for week 14 of this season. Ranked the #59 prospect in the 2019 class and a 4 star w/ a score of 95. So she is right on the cusp of being rated 5 stars (96+). Gotta believe that ESPN will bump her up to a 5 star after the season she is having.

Have followed Marisa’s high school career closely and she has the complete game. Has excellent handles, is extremely fast, can create her own shots, great at dribble driving, is an expert 3 point marksmen and a ball hawk on defense with quick hands. Averages 4.9 APG game and makes her teammates better. Was PSW First Team All-State in Class 6A as a junior and figures to repeat again this year as a senior. She has won so many All-State, All-WPIAL, All-Conference and AAU basketball awards that her parents are going to have to add a room onto their house to hold all the plaques and trophys. Will be in the running for both the 2019 Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year and also the coveted Miss PA Basketball award. Have seen Karisma Ortiz play several times and while a good player (inconsitent 3 point shooter) Makenna Marisa is way better. Not a knock on Ortiz at all… Marisa is just that good. Last, Marisa has been a lifelong Penn State fan (virtually no chance of her transferring), her mom played for Penn State Behrend and her grandfather Rudy Marisa was the legendary HC at Waynesburg College (now called Waynesburg University) with 565 career wins. Rudy played on the Penn State MBB teams from 1953-1956. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. His best Waynesburg team reached the NAIA National semifinals. He taught his granddaughter everything that he knew about the game.

I expect Marisa to break into the Lady Lions starting lineup at some point during her freshman season as she is just too good to sit on the bench. Could be PSU’s next 2,000 point scorer if she stays healthy for all 4 years.

For those that would like to watch Marisa play in person: Peters Township will be playing Garnet Valley this coming Friday, March 22nd. @ 6 pm at the Giant Center in Hershey. Or you can watch the game live on PCN TV. I’m pretty sure that TribLive HSSN will be live streaming the game also.
