Poor economy cuts into college athletics

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Count college sports among the sagging economy's latest victims.

A newly released NCAA report shows that just 14 of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision schools made money from campus athletics in the 2009 fiscal year, down from 25 the year before.

Not to be overly critical, but when they say “made money”, what is their criteria? If a school has a few dollars revenue over expenses, but find somewhere to spend it, does that mean they “made” money", or did they break even? The article isn’t really clear on that.
