OT: Big Diamond Day for PSU

#1

PSU hosts first round play in the NCAA softball tournament starting tomorrow (Friday) at Beard Field. The tournament starts with #13 Oregon (38-15) facing American East champ Albany (27-21) at 2:30. PSU (28-22-1) takes on A10 champ Fordham (41-17) at 5:00. Winners face off Saturday at 2:30 with the losers in the double elimination tournament meeting at 5:00 pm.

Penn State Softball NCAA Regionals Preview

On the bigger diamond, the men are in Ann Arbor for the final weekend of the regular season. Today they beat last place Michigan 1-0 to move into a tie for sixth place, the last spot that qualifies for the Big Ten tournament. Four teams, Purdue, Ohio State, Penn State, and Indiana are fighting for the last three Big Ten tournament slots with just two game left. The good news is that Penn State controls it’s own destiny and with one more win, they are in. In fact, the race is bunched so tightly that they can actually finish as high as tied for second (although I believe that they would lose the tie-breaker for seeding in the tournament - it’s actually too complex for me to try figure out at the moment)

With that winning percentage overall, do they have ANY chance for a NCAA at-large? I just always assume no for a northern team, but it is worth asking!

#4

No. As usual, the Big Ten will be a one bid league.

#5

I hope Fordham finds their way here.

#6

Sweet !!!

I am hoping to make a fortune by opening a stand selling Birkenstocks and cargo shorts.

It bummed me out when Lilith fair was cancelled. But, this is the next best thing !!!

Not hard to find. It’s pretty close to University Park, MD. Where did you find that?

Unfortunately, they did.

The Nits dropped a 2-0 heartbreaker to the Rams. Jackie Hill shut out the Rams through six but an error in the top of the seventh let the lead runner get on and Jackie, perhaps pitching a little too carefully, wound up grooving one to the Fordham’s senior second baseman, Beccah Wiggins. Wiggins, who is Fordham’s alltime leading run producer, slammed a two-run homer over the left center fence. The story of the game was Fordham’s star pitcher Jen Mineau who struck out 13 (including eight of the first nine she faced) in earning the shut out win.

Jackie Hill is one of the most attractive women’s softball players I’ve ever seen.

I don’t see how anybody gets a hit at this level. Women’s softball pitching is astounding.

Well there is a portion of Lewisburg called College Park.

The guys drop a tough one in 11 to Michigan. Looks like they will be in a must win situation tomorrow.

#14

What is the tie breaker for making the Big Ten tourney? If we tie with Indiana for 6th place, it looks like we didn’t play. Is overall record used (which would favor PSU).

#15

No. It’s the record against all teams from 1-6 which I haven’t yet bothered to figure out.

#16

Yep, and let’s hope OSU loses today @ Minney and IU loses @ Illinois. BTW, the PSU @ Michigan game will be shown live on the BTN today @ 4 PM.

Ohio St/Minnesota play 2 today, no? They were rained out yesterday.

#18

No. The final game in their series was supposed to be yesterday but will be played today instead.

If my calculations are correct, PSU is in with a win OR an Indiana loss. The Indiana/Illinois game is scheduled for a 1PM start so the Nits should know whether they need the win or not by the start of their game at 4PM.

I also believe that if OSU loses and winds up in a three way tie with PSU and Indiana, OSU is out.

OK, I’ve now figured it out (there were just too many options yesterday).

Current Standings:

Ignoring the top of the standings (MSU has clinched) and just focusing on PSU’s status here’s what happens.

A. PSU wins, OSU wins, Indiana wins:

  1. OSU
  2. PSU
  3. Indiana

B. PSU wins, OSU wins, Indiana loses:

  1. OSU
  2. PSU
  3. Indiana

C. PSU wins, OSU loses, Indiana wins:

  1. PSU
  2. Indiana
  3. OSU

D. PSU wins, OSU loses, Indiana loses:

  1. PSU
  2. OSU
  3. Indiana

E. PSU loses, OSU wins, Indiana wins

  1. OSU
  2. Indiana
  3. PSU

F. PSU loses, OSU wins, Indiana loses

  1. OSU
  2. PSU
  3. Indiana

G. PSU loses, OSU loses, Indiana wins

  1. Indiana
  2. OSU
  3. PSU

H. PSU loses, OSU loses, Indiana loses

  1. OSU
  2. PSU
  3. Indiana

Simplistically, PSU is in with a win or an Indiana loss. What position they get depends on what OSU does. However there isn’t much difference between 5 and 6 - just basically who you will play and I haven’t bothered to figure out those scenarios (it would be either Purdue, Ohio State or Minnesota).

If you assume all these outcomes are equally likely (and there is no reason not to), then Penn State has a 75% chance of getting in.

PSU currently is up 9-2 @ Michigan and they have already secured the # 6 seed in the BT tournament since IU lost today! PSU will play the # 3 seed on Wednesday @ 3:35 according to the link below live on the BTN.

PSU Lady Lion softball team beat Albany so they will now face Fordham again tonight @ 7:30 PM.
