Majok Majok

I’m not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere but I was told by someone up at Fairfield that he failed to meet NCAA academinc requirements so he won’t be playing this year. So I guess we don’t have any reason to be upset we didn’t get him.

Did you see that his cousin left uconn a few weeks ago.

So did he not qualify due to bad grades/test scores, or was there a problem with some of the high schools he attended? I know the NCAA looked into Ater Majok’s high school education before declaring him eligible at UCONN.

Majok did not meet the academic requirements to be a qualifier. I don’t understand how we “can’t go after” guys due to bad grades (players like Kevin Jones who qualified academically) but we can very actively recruit Majok, a non-qualifier?

Nobody knows that PSU was “actively” recruiting him. We had coaches watch him play. They may have learned of his grades and then made no further contact. The problem with recruiting is it is almost only the kids reporting what is going on.

Seeing that coaches aren’t allowed to discuss any specific recruit, it’s about the only way that it can be. You might hear a coach say “we had a couple of kids that we wanted to we couldn’t get in here”, but they can’t ever mention the situation involving a specific recruit.

It may be bad grades, but it may also be that he hasn’t completed or have documentation for all of the core courses that the NCAA requires. Looking back at some of the articles I don’t see PSU listed in the last few months before he chose Fairfield. Perhaps, we backed off when we discovered possible qualification issues.

You guys could all be right. I remember hearing a lot about him in the recruiting thread, but don’t remember what specifically I read. It might have been more people on this board hoping we would land him. The same situation played out with Malik Tinsley. Pretty much everybody in the Philly area knew we would never qualify, but he kept listing PSU, and even mentioned one time that he would be at PSU if his grades worked out. Everything I read was always from him though, so who knows what the real story was.

Majok[sup]2[/sup] was discussed at the height of our desperation for a PF. I don’t think Graham was discussed much, if at all, before he signed. So yeah, we’re all just guessing.

I think the board was just in love with his video. He looked like the dunking/rebounding forward everybody wants.

I thought they were in love with his name as much as anything - and at one time Harvard was recruiting him so I don’t think his grades are in question, sounds more like a core course problem.

Wasn’t he going to a prep school? Isn’t the purpose of many of these places simply to get guys eligible?
