Maggie Lucas named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

That puts her one award up on Kelly Mazzante at the equivalent point in their college careers.

FTR - the award didn’t exist when Kelly was a freshman.

Lucas Claims Second-Straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honor

Well on her way to her third with 28 points tonight.

gopsusports.com: Lucas Earns Third-Straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award

Went to the game Sunday. Maggie had a subpar game. I think right now she’s still learning the jump in competition from high school/AAU to DI. She’s not slow, but she hasn’t adjusted to the overall speed and ability of the opponents just yet. I’m sure there are some things that she was able to get away with before that she can’t at this level. It will be fun to see how she progresses.

Come on Lar…your a bit slow with the Maggie Lucas Big Ten player of the week update. At this rate she will blow away the conf record of being na med 4 times during the season. With Nickson, Lucas, Edwards coming on in their first year with Bentley running the show and improving with Greene underneath. They may just be a very good team by years end. For the first time in a while they are getting serious contributions from the center and forward positions. They are building and quality depth down low and at the center position. If Talia comes in later and is able to add some more quickness and rebounding they will really be in great shape If Nickson plays anything like she did the other night consistantly that really gives them inside out scoring options from 5 different players, maybe six.

They are such a young team too; freshmen and sophomores are averaging 62 ppg. And they are very balanced with five girls averaging in double digits (and a sixth at 8.8 ppg).

I think Maggie had a subpar game because the TT coaching staff drilled it into their players head, "Don’t let her shoot the open J."
Lar’s joke about the reporters not discussing Maggie didn’t make it to Kristi Curry. She knows about Maggie.

I noticed that sometimes the offense gets stale like the men’s team with people just standing around. Unlike the men, the ladies don’t seem to screen, but instead rely on spacing to get outside shots. They should add screening to their repertoire.

It may not matter if Nikki Greene develops into a better player this year–if Mia Nickson averages half of what she did last game (pts/rbs), I’d better plan for a road trip to the sweet sixteen after they win the first two NCAA games at the BJC.

Saw 2 games this season (TV.) This team has potential. BUT, it is very much a work in progress. Still too many silly turnovers. But, they have shown big improvement from last year. (due to new players and improvement of returning players.)
This will be an interesting team to watch through the season.
First 2 games at home - would be great news!

20 and 22 points in her two outings this week. She will probably pick up her fourth straight award unless they are tired of giving it to her.

4 straight would be a huge accomplishment.

Just wondering what her competition is like.

What are the other freshmen in the BIG TEN doing? What is the next closest as far as stats?

Maggie is fourth in the Big Ten in scoring at 17.0 ppg - the three ahead of her are all seniors.

There is only one other freshman among the top 30 scorers in the conference, Courtney Moses of Purdue who ranks 17th at 12.6 ppg.

FTR - at this point in her career, Kelly Mazzante was averaging 17.5 ppg.

Four weeks in a row for Maggie!

It looks like Maggie and Courntey are the only freshmen to make the list of any of the major stat categories.

They may be competing for just about every FOW honor this year. If so, Maggie may be picking up quite a few more

By the time this year is done, the award might be named after her.

Twelve games into their careers:

She plays as much as a starter. It’s as if they have six starters–Maggie is secretly one of them.

Chalk up her sixth freshman of the week award.
