Lady Lion Season 2018-19

#1

Since the Lady Lion’s (7-4) have been doing slightly better than our men’s team I figured I’d start a thread as we move into conference season for our team. The Lady’s are similar to the men. For 4 games one of our crucial players, Amari Carter, was out due to an injury that occurred at the beginning of the Stony Brook game. Which led to the Ladies losing the game to Stony Brook, Florida State, and Duquesne and only beating Jacksonville in a 4 game stretch that she was out and taking some time to recover.

Thankfully as soon as she got back her help was crucial in dispatching St. Bonaventure and blowing out American.

What is the future for the Lady Lions though in this season? They are currently ahead of OSU (4-3), Nebraska (5-5), & Northwestern (5-3), and are tied with Purdue (7-4) after coming off of the OOC record. Meanwhile the Ladies OOC games are as follows:
Wins
vs. Providence (5-4)
at Fordham (6-5)
vs. American (4-5)
vs. Jacksonville (4-5)
vs. Princeton (5-7)
vs. North Dakota (3-7)
vs. St. Bonaventure (3-7)

Losses
vs. #13 California (9-0)
vs. Stony Brook (9-1)
at Florida State (10-1)
vs. Duquesne (5-4)

*The Ladies have lost most of their big games. However, 2 of them were played without Carter. I would argue that with Carter in the game our Ladies probably would have defeated Duquesne.

So where will we go with conference games?
This is the schedule and what I predict:
vs. #6 Maryland (10-0) Loss
at Indiana (9-0) Loss
vs. Wisconsin (8-3) WIN
at Rutgers (7-3) Loss
vs. Illinois (8-2) WIN
vs. Ohio State (4-3) WIN
at #6 Maryland (10-0) Loss
at Wisconsin (8-3) WIN
vs. Rutgers (7-3) WIN
at #23 MSU (9-1) Loss
vs. #16 Iowa (8-2) Loss
at Ohio State (4-3) WIN
vs. Michigan (8-3) Loss
at Northwestern (5-3) WIN
at #13 Minnesota (10-0) Loss
vs. Purdue (7-4) WIN
at Illinois (8-3) WIN
vs. Nebraska (5-5) WIN

I predict the ladies will go 10-8 in conference at the moment. If this is what happens then they will be 17-12 overall and will almost certainly be making another WNIT berth. If they are able to snag an extra win or two from a ranked opponent or an unranked opponent such as Michigan or get through two rounds of the B1G Tourney they could get a high seed in the WNIT. But once again it would take a miracle for the Ladies to get to the Tournament. The losses to Duquesne and Stony Brook are too great (despite Stony Brook being good they needed the win) and their OOC wins are so far not helping them out.

#2

I think you’re predictions for the B1G schedule are a bit optimistic, but even if you’re spot on, I don’t think that projected record will be good enough to earn Coquese a new contract.

You think Sandy cares enough? Gasp.

I have no change in my projections going into conference play. I believe the Lady Lions will go 10-8 in conference play and added with their OOC 7-4 record will obtain a 17-12 record and get a better seed in a 3rd in a row WNIT birth, almost ensuring (at least to Sandy Barbour) that Coquese Washington gets another contact if she so chooses to stay. The OOC record improved immensely over the past few days. North Dakota, Princeton, Providence, and Fordham all helped out the Lady Lions.

The only blemish it would seem is Duquesne, which some are predicting to actually win the A10. Fordham regularly is at the top of the A10 as well. For those who think that I am being too generous I will say that I believe the Ladies can actually beat OSU twice this year. Their 4-5 record is a strong one, but nonetheless their wins are against teams that in some aspects are weaker than PSU.

Saturday, December 29th
1:00pm - Princeton at New Hampshire
2:00pm - Pittsburgh at Duquesne
2:00pm - Ohio at American
3:00pm - Providence at #22 Marquette

Sunday, December 30th

2:00pm - Jacksonville at Florida International
2:00pm - Purdue-Ft. Wayne at North Dakota
3:00pm - MTSU vs. Fordham
5:00pm - Harvard at #14 California

Lady Lions OOC opponents I predict of 4-3 this weekend. Princeton, Jacksonville, North Dakota, and California will likely win. The others are either tossup or lose.

#7

Wins:
Princeton (8-7) destroyed New Hampshire in a road victory 90-42.
Fordham (8-5) defeated Maine in OT in their first game of their own tournament.

Losses
Pittsburgh (9-5) defeated Duquesne (5-7) 66-58 in a “road” game.
American (4-7) lost to one of the remaining unbeaten women’s teams Ohio U. (11-0) 77-67
Providence (8-6) was destroyed at #22 Marquette 85-46

So far my predictions are holding for this weekend. In fact, any game that is a tossup at this point I am going to put in the “LOSE” category. Just because that’s where I think we are at right now. The Duquesne loss still stings. However, if the Lady’s have a winning record this year depending on where they are at I think the committee(s) will take that Amari Carter was out due to injury into consideration for that loss. If Carter were there the offense would have probably been enough to defeat Duquesne and the Lions would be 8-4 right now.

Lady Lions are currently (7-5) (0-1).

As of 12.30.2018

Losses
vs. #14 California (9-1)
at Florida State (11-1)
vs. Stony Brook (10-2)

Still looking like Wisconsin is the first win of the season.

She’s probably being given one more year. The players are definitely there this season to get into the WNIT again and possibly get into the Tournament with either a few upset wins (they usually get one or two) or a deeper run in the conference tournament. I still project a 10-8 season. But it could easily be 12-6 as well. Time will tell.

An upset win tonight at Indiana would probably go a long way to securing a postseason spot.

at Indiana (13-1) Loss Correct
vs. Wisconsin (10-4) WIN
at Rutgers (9-3) Loss
vs. Illinois (8-5) WIN

I have the feeling Wisconsin is the first win. They also showed something that I was skeptical of, but Purdue isn’t the best road team which is good for us!

at #18 Minnesota (12-3) Loss
vs. Purdue (12-5) WIN
at Illinois (9-6) WIN
vs. Nebraska (7-8) WIN

The Lady Lions took another loss from a game that they stood a good chance of winning after playing 2 solid quarters. Alas the Lady Lions have fallen to 1-3 in conference play. However, the Ladies are about to enter a small stretch where they could break even and get to 3-3 with upcoming home games against Illinois and Ohio State, bizarrely Illinois being the better team. After that the Ladies will face #9 Maryland on the road along with a road game against Wisconsin shortly following. I think the Lady Lions have an excellent chance of going 3-1 in the next 4 game stretch and hopefully holding a 11-8 | 4-4 record after the Wisconsin game.

If the Ladies stay on the projection that I have them on they will most certainly nab another WNIT bid due to them being 17-12 before the Big Ten Tournament (an improvement from 2017-18 in their overall record)

#17

Lady Lions are currently (9-7) (2-3). 10th in conference.

As of 01.12.2019
Wins
at Fordham (12-6)
vs. Wisconsin (10-7)
vs. Providence (10-8)
vs. Illinois (9-7)
vs. Jacksonville (9-8)
vs. Princeton (8-8)
vs. American (8-8)

Losses
vs. #9 Maryland (15-1)
at Florida State (14-2)
at #25 Indiana (15-3)
vs. Stony Brook (14-3)
vs. Rutgers (14-3)
vs. California (10-5)
vs. Duquesne (9-8)

Conference games have started and my picks are locked in.
This is the schedule and what I predict (updating each team’s record with every update):
vs. #9 Maryland (15-1) Loss Correct
at #25 Indiana (15-3) Loss Correct
vs. Wisconsin (10-7) WIN Correct
at #20 Rutgers (14-3) Loss Correct
vs. Illinois (9-6) WIN Correct
vs. Ohio State (5-8) WIN
at #9 Maryland (15-1) Loss
at Wisconsin (10-7) WIN
vs. #20 Rutgers (14-3) WIN
at #23 MSU (12-3) Loss
vs. #17 Iowa (11-4) Loss
at Ohio State (4-8) WIN

at Northwestern (10-7) WIN
at #18 Minnesota (12-3) Loss
vs. Purdue (13-6) WIN
at Illinois (9-6) WIN
vs. Nebraska (7-9) WIN

The Lady Lions are doing well, it is early in the season but they have enough to miss the first round of the big ten tournament! They host OSU next, OSU is interesting because they have lost to good and poor teams and have beaten good teams as well in conference. The inconsistency is why I pick the Lady Lions. Say what you will the Lady’s have been consistent enough this season to see where some of the wins are at the moment. For the most part OOC has suddenly gotten better as well, which will only boost their profile. Their best win remains at Fordham and worst loss remains vs. Duquesne.

#18

Lady Lions are currently (9-8 | 2-4)

As of 01.18.2019
Wins
at Fordham (12-6)

at #25 Indiana (15-3)
vs. Stony Brook (14-3)
vs. Rutgers (14-3)
vs. California (10-5)
vs. Duquesne (9-8)

Conference games have started and my picks are locked in.
This is the schedule and what I predict (updating each team’s record with every update):
vs. #9 Maryland (15-2) Loss Correct
at #25 Indiana (15-3) Loss Correct
vs. Wisconsin (10-8) WIN Correct
at #20 Rutgers (14-3) Loss Correct
vs. Illinois (9-8) WIN Correct
vs. Ohio State (7-8) WIN Incorrect
at #9 Maryland (15-2) Loss
at Wisconsin (10-8) WIN

at #23 MSU (13-3) Loss
vs. #17 Iowa (13-4) Loss
at Ohio State (7-8) WIN

at Northwestern (10-7) WIN
at #18 Minnesota (13-4) Loss
vs. Purdue (13-6) WIN
at Illinois (9-8) WIN
vs. Nebraska (8-9) WIN

The Ladies may have more wins than the men, but they found a ridiculous way to lose. They allowed for a 22-4 run for OSU to close the final quarter and take the Ladies into OT. Where the Lady Lions then took the lead by 3 for all but the final 36 seconds and allowed OSU to tie it up and then steal the lead and the win. That win would have been helpful to get the Ladies back into the spotlight with a men’s team that has been reeling somewhat. Oh well.

Lady Lions are currently (10-9 | 3-5)

As of 01.26.2019
Wins

at #14 Rutgers (15-4) Loss Correct

at Northwestern (12-7) WIN
at Minnesota (13-6) Loss
vs. Purdue (15-6) WIN
at Illinois (9-10) WIN
vs. Nebraska (9-10) WIN

With the Lady Lion sweep of Wisconsin the Ladies are moving to 10-9 overall and a tie for 10th place in-conference. A bye for PSU will be crucial if they want to get anywhere else this season. Next up is #14 Rutgers and the chance for PSU to get an upset victory, it is very possible as the Ladies have been playing well overall. Will they get over the hump? I don’t know. As far as the win predictions, although I have them locked in the Michigan home game is suddenly starting to look like a better game for PSU. Time will tell.

#20

If they get this upset I think the Ladies will have the chops to get a 3rd Straight WNIT bid, they’d have the ability to dispatch Northwestern, OSU (hopefully), Minnesota, Illinois, and Nebraska. Along with a signature win, the WNIT would hopefully take them.
