Just wanted to call this out. It might get lost in the subsequent drama, but this is an amazing bit of work. Wouldn’t have happened without Payton Banks, either.
The kid is a player. Even in the MN game, he was a workhorse but his shots just weren’t falling. They will. To see him and Tony hit clutch end-of-game free throws in consecutive games speaks volumes about them. Lamar’s effort in that sequence you highlighted was tremendous.
Dick Harter had a fantastic poster in his office of five Oregon Ducks sprawled on the floor fighting for a loose ball while a UCLA player (it may have been Walton?) stood by, gaping.
This clip is the new era’s version of that!
When I saw it “live” (on TV tape delayed on my DVR ) I could have sworn that #1 reached in to try to prevent an obvious breakaway, but did it slight enough not to get the call. On 2nd look he might have given him a slight bump, but nothing more than some “play on” contact. Thanks for sharing.
IMO, Stevens is the key to this team’s success this year. When he’s hitting that mid-range jumper, it seems like the rest of the team flows much better offensively.
When I first saw the 3 Roman kids play, it was the PIAA final in Hershey. That night at least, Lamar was the guy who, to my untrained eyeballs, looked to be the difference maker of the three. That was even before I saw his stroke from 15-18ft.
I really hope Bruce calls Pat in the off-season to teach him how they got DeRon Heyes all those looks from the elbow. I think Lamar could be devastating from that spot, and if they overplay him, he’s got the game to turn the corner and stuff it home instead. Then again, maybe that’s just too old school by now… like teaching the underhand freethrow
He put that rough 5-game stretch behind him and is playing his best ball of the season right now. Love watching this kid.
Vote for Lamar!
Do go vote for Lamar at the link above, but here is the dunk:
Lamar made the finals!
I voted for Stevens because I’m a Penn State homer, but that dunk by Jayjon Taylor was just awesome… I feel guilty about voting for Stevens.
This is a quintessential Penn State basketball fan attitude.
Lamar’s 30: 14/19 FG, 1-3 FT, 1-3 3P, 5 REB, 1 BLK, 4 STL
Good for him!
Impressive, especially at his height
