EAST LANSING -- Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said Friday he wanted retired forward Delvon Roe to play against Ohio State in a nostalgic return to the court on Senior Day, but the school has determined that NCAA eligibility rules will not allow for Roe to dress for the game.

From cream cheese on bagels to this, the NCAA has some odd rules.

So, Wisconsin can play a pro baseball player at QB, but wrong for MSU to play injured cager and actor on senior night?

One would have to assume then that Roe has played the part of a basketball player in his acting roles. That is definitely a screwed up situation.

Imagine how scary MSU would be if they had Roe.

Geary Claxton faced something similar. I think after he got injured he dropped classes he didn’t need to graduate, so technically he wasn’t full time and eligible at senior night.

12.5.2.1 Advertisements and Promotions After Becoming a Student-Athlete. After becoming a
student-athlete, an individual shall not be eligible for participation in intercollegiate athletics if the individual:
(a) Accepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend
or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind; or
(b) Receives remuneration for endorsing a commercial product or service through the individual’s use of such
product or service

But Geary was physically unable to play also because he tore his ACL earlier in the year. Roe chose not to comeback because of the wear and tear on his knee plus the pain. I’m sure Roe could have started the game at the very least and been removed in their first possession by Izzo calling a TO. Would have been a nice moment for the kid and the program and a classy thing for MSU and Izzo to do for the kid.

Geary was going to go out for the opening tip too.
