I can’t speak to Villanova’s hiring process/procedures pre-Rollie Massimino because I’m struggling to find information on Jack Kraft’s pre-Villanova coaching history, but really since Rollie, they’ve been a job that looks internally for coaches who have been there before. Rollie, Jay Wright and Steve Lappas all were assistants at Villanova at some point before becoming the head coach there.
Pat Chambers is familiar with the recruiting area and familiar with the program, he seems like someone they’d at least interview if Jay Wright left. Mind, I don’t think Jay Wright would leave, I’ve said it before, he reminds me of Tom Izzo in that he’s destined to coach college kids forever.
Villanova was Jack Kraft’s first college head coaching job. He was a high school coach in the Philly area before that including two years at Malvern Prep and 12 years at Bishop Neumann. His Neumann teams won the Catholic League title in 1948 and 1954.
Kraft replaced Al Severance who had been the head coach for 25 years. Severance’s assistant Ed Scullin was one of the leading candidates for the job and resigned after Kraft was hired.
Al Severance coached NBA Hall of Fame player Paul Arizin from LaSalle High. Severance died the morning of April 1, 1985, the day that Villanova won its first NCAA men’s basketball championship.
P.S. I think Rollie was an assistant under Chuck Daly at Penn before getting the Villanova head coaching job.
