Penn State at Virginia - Don’t know why I have a good feeling about this one, but I do. I really feel the arc will be open and the 3-balls will be falling. Defensive battle, but PSU hits some daggers down the stretch.

Northwestern at NC State - yes, the Mildcats have looked good so far this season, beating Notre Dame, while the Pack has been quite pedestrian. But first game away from Chi-town for NW will be tricky though it’s not the toughest of Tobacco Road stops.

Wake Forest at Purdue - Boilers look the part this season. Shouldn’t be challenged in this one as Wake hasn’t played anyone this season and lost to Wm & Mary

Maryland at Indiana - Terps have started out slow, but Hoosiers are still too young an outfit.

Michigan State at North Carolina - Might be going against my better judgment, but MSU has a lot of experience and Izzo will have them ready after the wake up call in losing to Florida. Interesting stat is that UNC is only 5-5 in ACC/Big Ten Challenge games, while Sparty has the only winning record for the Big Ten at 5-4.

Va Tech vs Iowa - The Hokies have struggled, but not as much as Iowa. Gatens could really be the difference if he gets it going, but I’ll take the slightly better team.

Boston College at Michigan - BC has lost to St Joe’s and Northern Iowa. Manny will be Manny. This should not be a game.

Duke at Wisconsin - Bucky has a shot here playing at the Kohl. They played quite well in Maui. But this is Duke, right? They are 10-0 in the Challenge for a reason.

Florida State at Ohio State - 'Noles fresh off of winning Old Spice, but Turner will be too much.

Illinois at Clemson - Tigers playing really good ball and are just too tough down low for the soft, struggling Illini. Could get ugly.

Minnesota vs Miami - Minny looked like they could be the pick after beating Butler last week. Then they lose to Portland and Texas A&M. Home team gets the nod.

I haven’t added it up as I’ve been going along so here goes…

ACC 6
Big Ten 5

Big Ten has hit the skids this past week, but these are special games when the talent rises up a bit. Big Ten has the talent to win this Challenge. It will be very close, but PSU needs to win tonight at UVA for it to happen IMO.

What the heck… I’ll play the percentages, as in B10 is due.

B10 6-5

Pomeroy Predicted Scores:

UVA 72 PSU 60

N.C. State 67 NW 59
Purdue 73 Wake Forest 56
Maryland 71 Indiana 59
North Carolina 72 Michigan State 71
Virginia Tech 57 Iowa 53

Boston College 76 Michigan 74
Duke 70 Wisconsin 60
Ohio State 60 Florida State 59
Clemson 81 Illinois 65
Minnesota 59 Miami 57

ACC wins 8-3

Some of these are close enough that the numbers could change from day to day. I’ll repost if there’s a change.

Duke at Wisconsin sounds interesting. Who will set the tempo?

#6

If it is a game that Wisconsin can set the defensive tone that will favor them since Duke would prob like to play a faster tempo than Wisky

#7

Looks closer than most years to me - but the games are all so close, it could still end up pretty lopsided if they all fall one way or the other.

Vatech, Purdue, and NC State look like the only games I’d feel good picking winners in - with those three being the heavy favorites.

Wisconsin plays sound, fundamental defense, but I think they often set the tone with their offense … when the other team gets the ball, they can fly down the court and take a quick shot if they want, but Wisconsin is going to pass the ball around until they find a good shot to take, even if that means taking up all 35 seconds.

9-3 ACC. I think the B10 can grab up to 5 though. (Minnesota, Indiana, PSU)

#10

I do not understand the overwhelming opinion that NW is going to get smacked. NC State is not good.

#11

That’s what we were saying about UNC-Wilmington. But when a young team goes on the road for the first time to play at an ACC venue, it’s a new experience entirely. Northwestern is the better team and if they were playing in Evanston this would be a “no doubt about it” game IMO.

Come on mjg…I don’t see your predictions.

BTW Lar, does this put me up 1-0 against your beloved Pomeroy ;D

#15

Lar - Question for you (or anyone else if you know the answer). Does Pomerroy have the predicted scores up somewhere on his site, or do you have a spreadsheet that is running them? I ask because I looked around and didn’t see them, and I seem to remember that he doesn’t usually start predicting games until a little later in the season. Just wondering if it is somewhere and I’m missing it. Thanks.

I only made one prediction – PSU would beat UVA. That makes me perfect in the challenge. But, since you are tossing out the challenge, here are my predictions:

Monday
Penn State @ Virginia 7:00 ESPN2

Tuesday
Northwestern at N.C. State 7:00 ESPNU
Wake Forest at Purdue 7:00 ESPN
Maryland at Indiana 7:30 ESPN2

I think I have the Big Ten winning 6-5. But my math isn’t what it used to be.

With the win last night, PSU became the first Big10 team w/ multiple road wins in the history of the Big10/ACC challenge.

Thanks mjg…just joshin with ya.

You and I are on the same page except for the NW game. I hope I am wrong and you are correct.

#19

Big Ten has to come out of tonight tied. IU and IA should be losses. Purdue should be a win. I think it’s crucial we get a road win from either NW or MSU. It’s tough b/c they’re both on the road against good matchups, but who said winning this first one was going to be easy?

That way on Wednesday, after UM and OSU win, the BT would only have to have one of ILL/MN/WIS.

It’s going to be another 6-5 contest that could go either way IMO.

#20

He doesn’t predict the scores yet. I have a spreadsheet that’s doing the work for me (and I should add a disclaimer that I’m not sure that I calculate home court advantage the same way that Pomeroy does so it’s possible that my predictions might be a point or two off from what his actually would be).
