And your transfer is... (Welcome, D.J. Newbill)

This guy

He averaged 30 min 9ppg 6rpg and 1.6 steals. Big get? Seems a bit underwhelming.

I’m making a guess here with this development that this transfer in answers speculation over Tre Bowman"s status, he’s gone and will not be back. There is this afternoon a front page article on the BWI site about Devin Thomas and Penn State, we are still a serious contender for him.

Apparently he was once committed to Marquette but then they rescinded their offer: http://marquette.scout.com/2/942451.html

Will be interesting to find out officially or unofficially (Marquette board?) what happened there. Seems like a big jump from Marquette to Southern Miss.

Hes only a sophomore and played 30+ MPG and averaged 9+PPG as a freshman – I think that is solid for a freshman. Hes listed as a guard but only took 14 three pointers (made 6).

Haven’t read them yet, but these articles look like good starting places:

Edit: Makes a little bit more sense now that he went to a mid-major. He had already signed his LOI before being “cut loose” in late June. That doesn’t leave too much time to find the best school.

Nice dunk:

Only video of length I found is a 3 minute clip of Newbill training and being interviewed for SMU:

Well Chamber gets his first Philly Recruit, by way of transfer though.

The rivals article says he couldn’t go to another Big East School since he had signed with Marquette. That seems pretty severe given that he never played, didn’t break any rules AND was let go by Marquette – not the other way around. Some rules are just stupid.

Yep, stupid. It also makes a lot of sense why he transferred to a big conference after his freshman year. Southern Miss was probably more of a pit stop for him, rather than potentially being his final place.

Newbill transfers to Penn State

Welcome DJ!!

3* Rivals, 2* Scout, and not exactly a big man. It seems like the early reports of this transfer over-hyped him and didn’t really have a clue who he was. Saying this was a big man and Chambers’ first “big time” recruit? Definitely set us up for disappointment. I hope that Chambers does not label this a big time recruit, because I expect better when that label comes around.

That being said, welcome to PSU Devonte and I’m excited to see you play!

If Marquette saw enough in him to not only offer him but pursue him until he committed then good enough for me. He was a victim of a numbers game at Marquette and while his stats aren’t going to wow any one he was only a freshmen.

He’s got some game time experience, it’s just too bad he won’t be in the lineup this year.

I think it’s a very good pick-up. 30+ mpg as a true freshman is EXCELLENT. Started EVERY game!! I like his stats. .535 starting %! I like that he does not have alot of 3s attempted.
I remember Newbill from the PIAA play-offs.
I think he is a very functional player!!

Welcome to PSU.

Oversigning victim when they took a transfer from Oregon.

Oh, and this is exciting.

For those who do not think Newbill’s Freshman year was excellent, compare them to Talor’s Freshman stats.

…(look them up yourself and do your own math)…

Jones’ take on the Newbill commitment.

Good stuff, thanks to you for posting and Dave for spending some time on it.

DJ is the LEGIT 2/3 that is desperately needed in the program. Major minutes to be expected as a sophomore, though not a kid that a program is built on, but definitely a very good piece of the puzzle. Great job, staff!

I genuinely think we got ourselves a player, it’s just too bad he’ll have to sit 'cuz we could really use someone with D1 minutes to run with Frazier.

Great read. I’m liking what i am reading about this kid… He seems like a player. I was disappointed at first bc I was hooping for a legit big, but I’m liking this guy.
